Mobile Applications Report – 2010

Author: Fatih Boran Berber  |  Category: ICT Technology News, Mobile technology

This report covers the Apple App Store for iPad, the Apple App Store for iPhone,BlackBerry App World, Google Android MarketNokia Ovi Store, Palm App Catalog, Windows Marketplace for Mobile (6.x), and Windows Phone 7 Marketplace for the year 2010, while identifying trends and providing insight into the most popular content of 2010. The major findings are:

  • Apple grew the most in 2010 in terms of the absolute number of applications, however the runner- up’s show more growth in terms of percentages. The Apple App Store for iPhone doubled it’s total during the past year to almost 300,000 applications, while the total number of applications available for Google Android Market today, almost 130,000, is 6 times the number of applications available one year ago. BlackBerry App World and Nokia Ovi Store showed triple digit growth in the last year as well, to nearly 18,000 applications and 25,000 applications, respectively.
  • The high download volumes of free applications appear to attract developers to switch to monetization methods other than paid.
  • The top 300 free applications in the United States generated, on average, over 3 million downloads each day during December 2010, while only 350,000 paid applications are downloaded daily. However, paid downloads increased almost 30% more than free downloads in the top 300 when comparing the download figures of December 2010 to those of June 2010.
  • Comparing June data to that of December in the United States, we see that the share of revenue generated by in-app purchases from the most grossing free applications more than doubled for both the iPhone and iPad. At the same time, it becomes clear that the share of revenue generated by in-app purchases from free applications is much smaller on iPad (15%) compared to iPhone (34%).
  • While the proportion of free applications grew, the average price of the applications also declined. A decline in price can be observed in the 100 most popular applications in the Apple App Store for iPhone, BlackBerry App World, Google Android Market and Nokia Ovi Store.

Author: Fatih Boran Berber  |  Category: Mobile technology, Telecom Products & Services

Hello all,

Ericsson has again completed  a pretty comprehensive “Consumer Telecom Services” market research, which I believe has got influential messages.

Just to highlight a few of them:

- Average Turkish consumer started extending, “buying and renewing”  lifecycle of devices, and prefer to buy the highest technology which would not be outdated and last longer.

- Which is the most concern of Turkish consumer is not the Global Warming but Terrorism.

- 150-200 SMS Per Day average is not extraordinary for Turkish youth :) stunning, against European averages.

- There is the tendency to use both fixed and mobile voice services, as well as internet services.

- 12% is interested in the Bundle Offer (Fixed and Mobile Voice & Data)

- There is over 50%  for each of mobile voice, fixed data and fixed voice services.

- They are interested in the Bundle Offer with the expectations respectively; 50% discount, 42% one bill, 30% manageable cost, 20% quality

- There is a negative perception against contract periods extending over 12 months.

- Internet usage is mostly in areas respectively; instant messaging, social networking, online TV/Video, online Game, e-commerce, Blogging, etc.

- Consumers, who do not have internet blames; 40% not having a computer, 30% not being educated how to use

- Non internet users claims they would buy internet, 40 % for 30 TL/month, 80% for 15 TL/month

- 20 TL per month, seems to be the pricing for highest profitable uptake

- % 5 of internet users, use 3G mobile BB.

- 3G users who are very contended with the services 48%, which is the top score around the world

- Whereas, 3G users who are unhappy with the service tops again with 11%

- 60% of 3G mobile BB users spend over 1 hour in the internet, whereas 16% spend well beyond 6 hours.

- 3G mobile BB consumer distribution between GSM operators is very similar to voice customer distribution.

- 75% of mobile BB users still keeps the fixed internet and 72 % plans to keep fixed internet in the future despite the mind-bending fact that 72% uses mobile BB at home and 37% uses it at work.

- The main reasons of not using mobile BB outside home and office is, 25% battery power and 25% heavy laptop

- Mobile BB users are more women than men.

- Over 50% pays around 25 TL for mobile BB

- Mobile device usage is; 60% Nokia,  25% Samsung, 2% IPhone, 3% other smartphones. 59% of phones are 2g, 24% are 3G
